A beloved modern classic, Steel Magnolias is set in a small Louisiana town, where a tight-knit group of women find solace, laughter, and strength in a local beauty salon. Over the years, they navigate love, family struggles, personal transformations, and health challenges, all while leaning on their unbreakable friendship. Through humor and heartache, their bond proves to be a source of resilience, reminding them—and the audience—of the power of love and support in life's most difficult moments.
We are seeking a vibrant, heartfelt cast for our production of Steel Magnolias. While the story is beloved by many, this production is not a recreation of the film. We are looking for actors who can bring authenticity, humor, and emotional depth to these iconic roles, honoring the spirit of the play while making the characters their own.
All roles are open to actors of all ethnicities, backgrounds, and lived experiences. Ages listed are approximate, and we welcome performers who connect with the essence of the characters, regardless of their exact age. Come as you are—we’re excited to see what you bring to the salon chair.
Truvy Jones
40s–60s
Warm, witty, and endlessly welcoming, Truvy runs the local beauty salon—the beating heart of this small Louisiana town. With a big laugh and an even bigger heart, Truvy is everyone’s confidante, dispensing hairdos and life advice in equal measure. She masks her own marital struggles with a cheery demeanor and lives by the motto: “There is no such thing as natural beauty.”
Annelle Dupuy-Desoto
20s–30s
Timid, quirky, and searching for herself, Annelle starts off shy and mysterious but evolves dramatically—swinging from uncertain outsider to born-again Christian with spirited conviction. She’s earnest, a little awkward, and often unintentionally funny, with a deep well of compassion and surprising strength beneath her bashful exterior.
Clairee Belcher
50s–70s
A grande dame of Southern sass, Clairee is a sharp-witted widow with a silver tongue and a heart of gold. The former mayor’s wife, she navigates life with grace, elegance, and biting humor. Clairee delights in stirring the pot, especially when it comes to her verbal sparring with Ouiser—but her love for her friends is fierce and unwavering.
Ouiser Boudreaux
50s–70s
Blunt, brash, and delightfully cantankerous, Ouiser has been in a bad mood for forty years—and wouldn’t have it any other way. Beneath her gruff exterior is a loyal, deeply caring woman who masks her vulnerability with sarcasm and sass. She’s the kind of friend who’d never admit how much she cares—but would show up in a heartbeat when it matters most.
M’Lynn Eatenton
40s–60s
Strong, self-contained, and deeply loving, M’Lynn is the emotional center of the story. As a mother, she struggles to balance control and connection, especially with her daughter Shelby. A quiet force of stability and grace, M’Lynn’s protective nature is born of profound love—and her climactic breakdown is a raw, unforgettable testament to maternal strength.
Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie
20s–30s
Vibrant, stubborn, and full of life, Shelby is a modern Southern belle determined to live life on her terms—even in the face of serious health challenges. She’s fiercely independent, radiating charm and optimism, and her bravery and spirit light up the room. Shelby’s journey is both joyful and heartbreaking, anchored by the love she gives and inspires.
